Contemporary woodcut (also known as “western woodcut”) uses different inking and printing methods than traditional Japanese woodcut. Become familiar with carving tools, refine your technique for carving images into wood, and learn how to ink and print your image using an etching press. Experiment with multiple wood blocks printed in layers and explore the physicality of materials in the woodcut process. Students bring their own carving tools (order here); all other supplies provided.
